sports medicine
Sports Medicine/Rehabilitative Medicine is a newer facet of veterinary medicine
used to promote patient recovery following injury and to promote strength training
for working dogs. Patients suffering from sports injuries such as cranial cruciate
injury and post surgical recovery can benefit from strength training and non-stressful
muscle maintaining activities. The benefits of such training can also help
the working dog, such as a Brittany Spaniel used in bird hunting, to ensure
that the pet is in optimum condition for
a hunt.
Routine use of an underwater treadmill (coming soon) in hip patients allows
for activity in a buoyant environment that does not cause stress on already
painful joints. This same activity can be used to help the post-op back dog
that is not fully ambulatory but needs activity to promote hind limb strengthening.
